The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) launched a centrally-sponsored scheme, the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PM FME), on June 29, 2020.
The PM FME scheme aims to empower, upgrade, and formalise the existing Micro Food Processing Enterprises (MFPEs) in the unorganised segment of the food processing industry by providing financial, technical, and business support.
In line with the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, this scheme endeavours to provide a national market for local and regional products, generate employment, and bring economic stability to the people.
The MoFPI and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (Nafed) have entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) wherein Nafed is leveraging its branding and marketing expertise to develop new brands and products as part of the PM FME scheme.
The PM FME scheme has adopted the One District One Product (ODOP) concept to focus on developing specific product categories for each district in India.
Makhana constitutes the ODOP category for the Darbhanga district of Bihar. Makhana King is the brand created by Nafed for MoFPI under the PM FME scheme for developing and marketing different varieties of Makhana.
Makhana, also known as fox nut, is a type of seed obtained from the Euryale ferox plant. Widely cultivated throughout Asia, it is a powerhouse of essential nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and amino acids as well as minerals like iron, zinc, and phosphorus. It not only boosts bone health and cardiac well-being, but also supports weight loss. Owing to its gluten-free, low-fat, and mineral-rich nature, makhana is fast emerging as a superfood. Its mild, neutral flavour compliments a variety of foods. Over 90 percent of India's entire production of makhana is produced in Bihar, making it the country's top producer.

Makhana King ODOP products [Makhana (Platinum Quality) and Roasted Makhana Chatpata Masala] are manufactured in MFPEs located in the Darbhanga district of Bihar. Choicest ingredients are directly procured from the farmers and processed by local MFPEs. It enables them to better their income and generate more employment. It, therefore, becomes instrumental in helping realise our Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Nafed focuses on creating and marketing premium quality products that promote health and holistic wellness.
The following MFPEs, located in Darbhanga district, were selected for manufacturing Makhana King products under the ODOP initiative. This initiative is generating greater business opportunities for the micro-enterprises and providing them much-needed access to the national market.
Two young entrepreneurs, Bhuwan Saraogi and Rachit Saraogi, established Makhayo Foods in 2020 with the idea of promoting the king of superfoods, Makhana, in a refined form. The company has assembled a team of professionals who work towards manufacturing various by-products of Makhanas. In addition to manufacturing the Makhana King product range, they source, manufacture, bulk pack, and market makhanas in different varieties and flavours.
Priti Bala Sahay and Madhu Malini Verma established Foody Bullu LLP in 2020 with the aim to create jobs in the state and establish makhana as the next superfood. In addition to manufacturing the Makhana King product range, they manufacture high-quality products while adhering to strict hygiene standards. The company has assembled a team of professionals dedicated to producing plain and flavoured makhanas at a reasonable price for the end customer.
Shravan Roy and Ruchi Mandal co-founded Sumitra Foods in 2019. In addition to manufacturing the Makhana King product range, the company specialises in manufacturing high-quality, customised makhana products with a wide range of value additions in various forms, sizes, and flavours for industrial and customer use. They primarily collaborate with women and a group of technocrats and food engineers to produce high-quality products. Sumitra Foods was recognised for its significant contribution during the MSME Honours 2021.
Ms. Mira Jha and Mr. Rajeev Ranjan co-founded PLU Pvt. Ltd. in 2021. In addition to manufacturing the Makhana King product range, the enterprise manufactures a variety of lip-smacking flavoured makhanas including Chat Masala, Peri Peri, Kurkure Masala, Salt & Pepper, Cheese, Tangy Tomato, Pudina, and Cheese Tomato.
SHHE Foods was co-founded by Mr. Rohit Raj Thakur, Mr. Abdul Allam Faraz, and Mr. Shishir Kumar Subham in 2021. In addition to manufacturing the Makhana King product range, the enterprise specialises in manufacturing a variety of plain and roasted flavoured makhanas like Pudina, Tangy Cheese, and Spicy Chatkara. Additionally, they manufacture Makhana Cookies and Makhana Kheer Mix in Vanilla and Strawberry flavours.
Ms. Sadhana Jha founded 7Cubes Ventures in June 2021. In addition to manufacturing the Makhana King product range, the enterprise manufactures premium quality makhana products like Nutri Makhana Powder, Makhana Flake, Organic Makhana, and Makhana Chunks that can be used to make desserts like kheer and pudding.
Founded by Ms. Rita Devi in 2022, Delci International manufactures premium-quality makhana. In addition to manufacturing the Makhana King product range, the company manufactures a wide range of flavoured makhanas like Roasted Makhana, Peri Peri Makhana, Tangy Tomato, Tomato Chilli, Punjabi Tadka, Hing Jeera, and Cream & Onion.
Mr. Manish Anand founded Mithila Naturals in 2018. In addition to manufacturing the Makhana King product range, the enterprise is engaged in the manufacture of high-quality makhana products like Plain Makhana, Roasted Makhana, Makhana Dessert, Makhana Powder, as well as a nutritious assortment of dried fruit and pickles.
Natural Enterprises was founded in 2021 by Mr. Ranjit Srivastava. In addition to manufacturing the Makhana King product range, the enterprise manufactures superior grade makhana such as Kurkure Makhana as well as an assortment of snacks.
