The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) launched a centrally-sponsored scheme, the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PM FME), on June 29, 2020.
The PM FME scheme aims to empower, upgrade, and formalise the existing Micro Food Processing Enterprises (MFPEs) in the unorganised segment of the food processing industry by providing financial, technical, and business support.
In line with the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, this scheme endeavours to provide a national market for local and regional products, generate employment, and bring economic stability to the people.
The MoFPI and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (Nafed) have entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) wherein Nafed is leveraging its branding and marketing expertise to develop new brands and products as part of the PM FME scheme.
The PM FME scheme has adopted the One District One Product (ODOP) concept to focus on developing specific product categories for each district in India.
Pineapples constitute the ODOP category for Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. Anaras is the brand created by Nafed for MoFPI under the PM FME scheme for developing and marketing Pineapple based products from Ri-Bhoi.
Pineapple, one of the most significant commercial crops, is grown in abundance in different regions of India. Famed for its sweet-citrusy flavour, the fruit is considered a nutritional powerhouse. It aids digestion, helps alleviate inflammation and pain, and may prevent chronic diseases.
Spicy Dried Pineapple
Premium luscious pineapples grown in Ri-Bhoi district are handpicked to create the Anaras Spicy Dried Pineapple. Anaras ODOP products (Spicy Dried Pineapple and Spicy Pineapple Fruit Bar) are manufactured in MFPEs located in the Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya. Choicest ingredients are directly procured from the farmers and processed by local MFPEs. It enables them to better their income and generate more employment. It therefore becomes instrumental in helping realise our Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Nafed focuses on creating and marketing premium quality products that promote health and holistic wellness.
The following MFPEs, located in Ri-Bhoi district, were selected for manufacturing Anaras products under the ODOP initiative. This initiative is generating greater business opportunities for the micro enterprises and providing them a much-needed access to the national market.
Located in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya, Savourit Food was established in 2018 by Mr Raymond Lyngdoh. In addition to manufacturing the ODOP Anaras product range, the micro enterprise is engaged in producing a range of jams, juices, wine, honey, and spices. They follow the necessary protocols to maintain authenticity of flavours and the quality of the products.
The Western Ri-Bhoi Farmers Producers Cooperative Society Ltd. was established in 2020 and is headed by Mr Pynthymmaior Nongstein (CEO). In addition to manufacturing the ODOP Anaras product range, they are actively engaged in training the farmers in the art of processing fruits and creating a range of jams, juices, and candies.
A food enthusiast, Dlesgracia Sten founded D. Sten Food Processing Unit in 2014 with the idea of promoting the culinary heritage of Meghalaya. In addition to manufacturing the ODOP Anaras product range, the unit is acknowledged for production of ginger candy, jams, and pickles. With a team of dedicated professionals, she is working rigorously to provide high-quality food products directly from the Ri-Bhoi district in Meghalaya.
Na-Lyng-Wiar is a micro enterprise founded in 2012 by Ms Isrin Mawnai. In addition to manufacturing the ODOP Anaras product range, the micro enterprise specialises in making pickles, jams, juices, candies, and wines. The enterprise is famed for using Queen pineapple variety cultivated in Ri-Bhoi to create delectable food items.
